Volunteer Profile - Jean
Read a Q+A session with Kanyana volunteer Jean;
Q: How long have you been a volunteer at Kanyana?
A: About four years. I started in the hospital helping my friend on her
shift. I liked doing the washing up.
Q: What do you do now?
A: I started making the meat mixture for Elle, the echidna, when I heard
that June needed someone to take over this job as she was very busy.
Now I pick up the beef mince from Coles and store it in my fridge. Every
Monday I make up the echidna mix and about 9kg of magpie meatball mixture
and freeze it.
Q: Why do you have to freeze so much? Couldn’t some of it be used
fresh?
A: No. It has to be frozen for at least three days in case there is something
in the mince that would harm the native animals.
Q: What do you do with
the “Quenda Kids” from Gooseberry
Hill Primary School?
A: Every Tuesday they come to chop up the vegies for the afternoon feeds.
I show the new kids what size to make the food for the different animals.
Q:
What do you like best about Kanyana?
A: The people. I like the social aspect, the company and I’m pleased
to know that Elle’s skin condition has improved since we altered
her mince recipe – that makes me very happy.
