You may wonder sometimes, where the rehabilitated birds at Kanyana have been
released? Well, we try to rehabilitate and release all adult birds back into
their original habitat whenever possible. For our orphaned baby birds, though,
it is a different story.
For our baby birds, we make groups of the same species and they spend their time rehabilitating in “release aviaries”. It is from these “release aviaries’ that these little birds are returned to a suitable habitat once they are fully independent. In the last 12 months, 364 birds have spent time in a “release aviary” prior to their release.
From VC Adrian’s home in Paulls Valley there have been 36 releases that included galahs, red wattle birds, butcher birds and parrots. From VC Blanka’s home in Duncraig there were 30 releases that included ravens, singing honey eaters, doves, kookaburras & kingfishers.
From Sue Gibbon’s property in Chidlow another 30 birds found their way to freedom including galahs, bronzewings, doves and kookaburras. VC Dianna in Darlington loves doves and she has released 31 of them and also some singing honeyeaters and a butcherbird. Pamela in Toodyay is wonderful with magpies and has released 5 for us from there. VC Faye in Walliston is great with very small birds and she has looked after and released 26 babies from 10 different species. Joanne in Armadale is our wattlebird friend and she has released 20 of them for us, plus some doves and black-faced cuckoo shrikes. From my own aviary in Lesmurdie, 56 birds were released. These included silver eyes, “28” parrots, singing honey eaters and pardalotes.
We are lucky to have so many “release friends” like Brooke in High Wycombe, VC Sue Turner in Wooroloo, the McGuire family in Kojonup, Carol and Craig in Bickley, and Dot in Gidgegannup, to name just a few of them. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks to everyone for their care and time in rehabilitating and releasing our precious birds.
